How to Deal with Hip Pain During Sumo Deadlifts

It’s time for another episode of STRONGER TV. Last week we went over how to deal with lower back pain during squatting. Make sure you check it out if you haven’t already.

This week we switch gears and start talking deadlifting and hip pain. Hip pain during the sumo deadlift is a very specific type of injury you see predominantly in powerlifters. Often times it pops up during periods of high intensity or volume phase or when peaking for an upcoming meet. This can be a drag because it can really hamper your performance.

Kiefer and I go over this issue and a bunch of ways to work around it. In the video below we cover:

  • Why the hip hurts during sumo deadlifts
  • How toe out and stance width affects stress and pain on the hip
  • What variables in training tend to increase risk of hip pain
  • How to modify the sumo deadlift to reduce low back pain
  • How pelvic and spinal positions affects the hip
  • How to deal with hip injuries in-season vs. off-season
  • A few basic exercises to help reduce pain

Check it out below!

So there it is. Hopefully after watching the video you now have some options when you’ve got some hip pain and still want to deadlift. If you enjoyed today’s content please head over to the youtube page and subscribe, give us a thumbs up and share it with your friends!

Sumo deadlifts for everyone,
